Maya Myth Moment–The Maya Collapse

In today’s post and video, Dr. Jaime Awe, director of the Belize Institute of Archaeology, discusses one of the most heated theories in archaeology.

As we approach the last five days before Dec. 21, 2012, we want to get further away from the nonsense about what is going to happen and talk about some of the important things that actually did so that we as a society all can learn from this experience, not be frightened by it. Part of our additional concern is that because of all the hype that’s been generated about Dec. 21, 2012, people are going to thumb their noses at hearing the important messages here–that there also are some important lessons we should be learning from the Maya.

Watch Dr. Awe, and then go to MVS2012.c0m and check out our book for iPad. Dr. Awe, Dr. Mark Van Stone and 13 other Maya scholars from around the world are in our one-of-a-kind book for iPad that will help educate you, your children or anyone you may know still worried about the next five days that there is little to fear, and much to learn about a very incredibly developed and fascinating people whose civilization rose to great power and then collapsed into the jungles of Mesoamerica to largely be forgotten about over time.

Maryland Senior Lecturer John B. Carlson is the feature of our Maya Myth Moment today as he discusses the knowledge the Maya had of the movement of the planets, the earth and cyclic time.  He also discusses the aspects of how much of the Maya knowledge we still have today and estimates of how much has been lost to the ages.

Part of the problem that’s stirred the Maya Meme is the fact that so much information IS missing.  And in the absence of such, that’s when the opportunity exists to fill in and make up information to fill in the gaps. That’s what leads to wild stories of doomsday predictions and bliss outs in just six more days….

Maya Myth Moment–Where Did The Maya Go?

Maya Myth Moment–Where Did The Maya Go?

There has been so much written about the Maya and the 2012 prophecy. True Maya scholars, like the 15 we have worked with to put together Dr. Mark Van Stone’s 2012: Science & Prophecy of the Ancient Maya as a book for the iPad, are attempting to use this interest in focusing attention on who the true Maya peoplereally were, and even still are today.

2012: Science & Prophecy of the Ancient Maya

2012: Science & Prophecy of the Ancient Maya by Dr. Mark Van Stone.

Today’s Maya Myth Moment features a brief excerpt of Dr. Van Stone explaining what happened to the ancient Maya and really sets up a question we all should be asking ourselves–Are we making some of the same mistakes that led to the demise of the Maya?

We encourage you to check out Dr. Van Stone’s book for iPad.  It’s the only one like it in the world, filled with 53 informative videos from 15 Maya scholars. The book also includes more than 200 photos, diagrams and illustrations that help explain Maya writings, art and architecture.  And all for only $14.99.  Visit MVS2012.com for more information.

Maya Myth Moment–How Much Do We Know About Mayan History?

Maya Myth Moment–How Much Do We Know About Mayan History?

Today’s video and Maya Myth Moment include Maya Scholar, Dr. Mark Van Stone, discussing how much we as modern scientists and people actually know and understand about the ancient Maya.

Palenque Palace from plaza in 1888

The Palenque Palace from plaza in 1888. Much of Maya history remains lost in the jungles of Mesoamerica.

If you did a Google search right now, you’d find thousands of websites all purporting to have vast knowledge of the Maya and many/most of them include misstatements about the nutty things that have been attributed to them.

With his book for iPad, Dr. Van Stone, along with the input of 14 other Maya scholars, created the most powerful resource yet assembled on the ancient Maya.  Just visit MVS2012.com and it will take you straight to the iBookstore where you can download the book, see 53 movies, hundreds of photos, diagrams and illustrations, we even put in an interactive puzzle of Tortuguero Monument 6 to make things fun.

Blowing Up The Bible

So how much do we really know about the ancient Maya? We have loved Dr. Van Stone’s analogy since the first time we heard it. Imagine if you took our modern Bible, wrapped it around a grenade, blew it all up and then picked up three scraps of the remaining paper and tried to tell the rest of the world the whole message of Christianity based on those three shreds of paper. Essentially, with just 1 percent of the Maya world uncovered and the remaining 99 percent still hidden in the jungles of Mesoamerica, that’s exactly the situation we have.  This also explains why it’s been so easy for so many to come along and project their beliefs, expectations and assertions onto the Maya.

Enjoy today’s video.  Also visit MVS2012.com to check out Dr. Van Stone’s book for iPad.  It is literally the only one like it in the world.

Maya Myth Moment–Mayan Prophecy; Is Prophecy The Right Word?

Maya Myth Moment–Mayan Prophecy; Is Prophecy The Right Word?

From this video excerpt in Dr. Mark Van Stone’s book for iPad, 2012: Science & Prophecy of the Ancient Maya, independent scholar, Dr. Barb MacLeod of Austin, Texas, talks about the meaning of the word “Prophecy.”  As in, should we be referring to what the may left behind carved in rocks across Mesoamerica more than 1,000 years ago as “prophecy” at all.  Her point is if you say that tomorrow you’re going to go shopping, is that a prophecy? The answer would be no.

Her point is if you have some divine input to see some ordained event in the future, that’s a little more like it.

So if the Maya wrote that at 13.0.0.0.0., the end of their calendar that the enigmatic god, Bolon Yokte was going to come down and put on a costume, is that really a prophecy or just a prediction of an event like tomorrow you’re going shopping?

Maya Myth Moment–The Galactic Alignment Dec 21 2012

The Galactic Alignment December 21 2012

One of the favorite Maya Myth predictions seems to be the whole concept of an impending galactic alignment where the earth is going to cross the galactic plane and we’re all going to be sucked into this vortex and die.

The greatest problem with this prediction is that according to diagrams you will see in this video, the Earth is actually going to miss the center of the galaxy by about three degrees on Dec. 21, 2012.  Whoops!

All this is really enough to make one wonder how something like this even gets started. So many predictions have been projected upon the Maya. Yes, they were great mathematicians and even astronomers, but so much of what people are talking about these next 24 days never even entered into their consciousness.  Makes one wonder what people 1,000 years from now will be saying about us, doesn’t it?

Maya Myth Moment–The Spiritual Transformation of Man

Maya Myth Moment–The Spiritual Transformation of Man

This is another version of New Age prophecy as tied to the Maya.  Again, it has nothing to do with the Maya.

Maya Myth Moment–Planet X or Nibiru

Maya Myth Moment–Planet X or Nibiru

Today’s Maya Myth Moment involves what the pseudo-scientists like to call Planet X. It often is called Nibiru and is said to be this massive planet or left over planet depending on whom one talks to, that is on this collision course with Earth.  And of course, this has found its way into the Maya meme for Dec. 21, 2012.

Planets of the Solar System

Planets of the Solar System (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Well, let’s look at it from this perspective.  If there was a planet about to collide with the Earth in the next 26 days, don’t you think if you went outside you’d be able to see it?

I heard one reason why we can’t was because it’s coming in more from the Southern Hemisphere and really can’t be seen north of the Equator, which seemingly falls into the category of “anything to keep a good fish story going.”

NASA has said there is no impending doom associated with a coming collision with a mysterious planetary form in the next month.

Next myth, please.

Maya Myth Moment–New Age Consciousness 2012

Maya Myth Moment–New Age Consciousness 2012

Today’s Maya Myth Moment centers on the New Age consciousness expected to arrive globally on Dec. 21, 2012.

The Bliss Out–Peace on Earth.

Dr. Anthony Aveni, in Dr. Mark Van Stone’s 2012: Science & Prophecy of the Ancient Maya refers to it as a “bliss out.”

But the problem with putting much stock in the New Age teachings is they’ve only been around for about 30-40 years.  They can’t be traced back to the ancient Maya, and often, that’s the attempt that’s made.

Watch today’s video below.  After that, we’ve added a special bonus from Dr. Van Stone’s book for iPad–the video of Dr. John Hoopes from the University of Kansas, tracing the whole 2012 meme back to Christopher Columbus‘ discovery of the New World.

Want more information on this amazing subject?  Sign up for the remaining 29 installments of the Maya Myth Moment, or go to the iBookstore and get a copy of Dr. Van Stone’s amazing book.
