Maya Myth Moment–The Making of the 2012 Meme

Maya Myth Moment–The Making of the 2012 Meme

So how did all this talk of a disaster on Dec. 21, 2012 even begin?  Today we turn to University of Kansas Professor Dr. John Hoopes, who previously traced the origins back to Christopher Columbusdiscovery of the New World, talks about the academic process and how early assumptions and interpretations were made “without all the data” and once more information was gathered, the previous assumptions were discarded by scientists, but latched onto by junk scientists and basically the whole of the Internet.

Is there anything we can learn from all this as we continue to explore the jungles of Mesoamericalooking for new information?  Have scientists done a better job over the last few decades of waiting to release interpretations of the finds?

We’re three days away from Dec. 21, 2012.  If you want to learn more about who the Maya really were, we encourage you to follow the link to MVS2012.com and check out Dr. Mark Van Stone’s book for iPad, 2012: Science & Prophecy of the Ancient Maya.  It’s full of 53 videos from 15 Maya scholars, hundreds of interactive photos, drawings and illustrations, and even some amazing 3D Maya masks.  Use this whole 2012 Meme as a teachable moment, whether for yourself, your children, class, or co-workers.

As we talked with the scholars who are in our book, almost all of them expressed a hope that because of the attention of Dec. 21, 2012, on the Maya, there will be a whole new generation inspired to study this amazing group of people who once had a mighty civilization here in the New World long before its discovery from European travelers.

Maya Myth Moment–Mayan Prophecy & Christopher Columbus

Maya Myth Moment–Mayan Prophecy & Christopher Columbus

In his book for iPad, Dr. Mark Van Stone interviewed friend and colleague Dr. John Hoopes from the University of Kansas who has been able to trace the origins of the Maya prophecy all the way back to Christopher Columbus and the discovery of the New World.

We show this video, which is available exclusively in Dr. Van Stone’s book for iPad, in hopes of educating the public about how far back all of this goes, but also to help show its progression through time. The story has changed significantly from its days back in the early 1500s.

Many thanks to Dr. Hoopes.   This is really good stuff.

Maya Myth Moment–New Age Consciousness 2012

Maya Myth Moment–New Age Consciousness 2012

Today’s Maya Myth Moment centers on the New Age consciousness expected to arrive globally on Dec. 21, 2012.

The Bliss Out–Peace on Earth.

Dr. Anthony Aveni, in Dr. Mark Van Stone’s 2012: Science & Prophecy of the Ancient Maya refers to it as a “bliss out.”

But the problem with putting much stock in the New Age teachings is they’ve only been around for about 30-40 years.  They can’t be traced back to the ancient Maya, and often, that’s the attempt that’s made.

Watch today’s video below.  After that, we’ve added a special bonus from Dr. Van Stone’s book for iPad–the video of Dr. John Hoopes from the University of Kansas, tracing the whole 2012 meme back to Christopher Columbus‘ discovery of the New World.
