The Maya Myth Moment–Aliens 2012

Aliens 2012

We didn’t do a video on this today. In part, it’s kind of hard to make a video of something there isn’t any scientific proof to support.

Yes, as with so many other things, the existence of aliens and an alien invasion has been tied to the Maya prophecy. But as scholars like Dr. Mark Van Stone will tell you, there’s not one shred of scientific evidence to support they exist, let alone, not one mention in Maya hieroglyphs or remains that talk about them.

Yes, the Ancient Aliens show has tried to tie Pakal’s Sarcophagus Lid to the ancient astronaut theory, but a careful examination of the text in Dr. Mark Van Stone’s book for iPad, 2012: Science & Prophecy of the Ancient Maya shows clearly that Lord Pakal was sitting in one of the Mesoamerican ceiba trees and what was claimed to be rocket flames in the TV series is clearly the base roots of one of these unique and special trees.

Editorially speaking, it’d be fascinating to find we are not alone in the universe. But we just don’t have any proof of it. And from talking to Maya scholars, the Maya didn’t have any either……

We included a photo of a ceiba tree taken by our friend, Dr. John Hoopes of the University of Kansas.

Archaeoastronomy or Cultural Astronomy? Which Term Do You Use?

By Donny Claxton

It’s my second full day at the Society for American Archaeology meeting here in Memphis and wow, did I ever learn a lot today. Regrettably, I wasn’t able to attend a single session or paper reading.  The day was spent filming video interviews of Dr. Anthony Aveni, Dr. John Carlson, Dr. Susan Milbrath and a host of other scholars from around the country who specialize in Maya studies. It is because of their studies, each knows a fascinating amount of information about the Maya and any doomsday predictions for Dec. 21, 2012.

Dr. Anothony Aveni SAA meeting 2011

Today, there also were discussions with Dr. Aveni and Dr. Carlson about using the term “Cultural Astronomy” as opposed to “Archaeoastronomy.”

(I want to straighten one thing up here while I can.  We use the Twitter name @Archeoastronomy–without the A behind the H, in part because Twitter would only allow enough characters to spell it that way.  I also realized today that I’ve been spelling Archeology without the A behind the H, too, which apparently is accepted by the dictionary, but AP Style book says to include the A, so from hence forward on the site, so shall be the policy.)

The discussion with Dr. Aveni went along the lines that the term “Archaeoastronmy” has been tarnished by crack pots who have come along and jumped on the term and taken it in weird directions.  This is me saying this, not Dr. Aveni, but the people from the History Channel’s Ancient Aliens show come to mind.

Dr. Aveni did say that even though that even the likes of Eric Van Daniken haven’t been entirely bad for the field because even with his wild psuedo-scientific claims, he’s generated an interest in the field that has brought actual scholars into its arena of study.  His point was that there are many scholars in the world today who would never have studied  archaeoastronomy if they hadn’t seen the wild claims of Lord Pakal’s sarcophagus cover allegedly being a depiction of him sitting in a space capsule and then went in search for the actual facts surrounding it.

Dr. John Carlson

I had really been looking forward to getting to know Dr. Carlson.  He reminds me of my maternal grandfather and is one of the kindest and smartest people I’ve ever had the pleasure of having a deep, and informative conversation with.

Dr. Tony Aveni

In meeting Carlson and Aveni, today really became a fascinating and incredible day to me personally.  I bought Dr. Aveni’s 2012 book, The End of Time–The Maya Mystery of 2012 and got it autographed.

I had some great one-on-one conversations wtih Dr. Carlson and if I could spend the next several years in conversations learning from these two geniuses, I’d still be starving for more knowledge. As Dr. Aveni talked on camera today, he would rattle off a citation of someone’s work from a 1978 paper and the reference being on page X, and it saying ABC and then he’d go right on to another, almost like a Sunday morning preacher citing chapters in the Bible.  It was truly amazing and inspiring.

Dr. John Carlson

Dr. Mark Van Stone

We made a lot of progress today on the development of Dr. Mark Van Stone’s first interactive book for the iPad on the 2012 meme.

I really cannot wait for this iBook to hit the market because with the interviews we’ve conducted over the past 24 hours to include in this first-of-its kind book, there literally will be no other resource like it available as we draw closer to Dec. 21, 2012.

And as I now call it a day, I’m going to bed with some incredible new knowledge, perspectives and comfort in having made some wonderful new friends.

It’s a rare occasion to have the chance to sit down with an expert in a field of study.  Today I’ve had the chance to interview two men who created their own field of study–Archaeoastronomy.  When was the last time you did that?  I bet the chances are slim it ever happens again in my life.

Archaeoastronomy v. Cultural Astronomy

So, which term do you use?  Have the likes of Van Daniken, David Childress and Giorgio Tsoukalos  tainted the word Archaeastronomy too much for your own tastes?

EXCLUSIVE VIDEO of an Ancient Aliens Guest About 2012 and The Maya

The Season Four premiere of  Ancient Aliens on H2, began a few weeks ago with two shows about the 2012 meme and the alleged catastrophic predictions of the Maya and somehow, how ancient aliens were involved.  One of the guest scholars of those two episodes, Dr. Mark Van Stone on Twitter, (@MayaTruth) has provided The Wonders Expedition with an exclusive video interview we’ve entitled:  What Ancient Aliens Left Out.

Dr. Van Stone is one of the world’s most recognized Mayanists and the author of the book, 2012: Science and Prophecy of the Ancient Maya.  It’s a great read and we encourage you to check it out, along with his Website.  He’s fun to talk with, doesn’t have a bad sun tan and Einstein hair, and most importantly of all, thinks that the presumption that the work of ancient humans being done instead by aliens is “racism against humanity.”

We are excited to bring you this exclusive interview and will be providing additional interviews as we go along, hopefully with other recognized scholars on 2012.  We’d like to talk with Giorgio A. Tsoukalos, Erich Von Daniken or David Childress, too, just to give them a fair shot.

 ANCIENT ALIENS

As the season premier began in mid-February, we began to tweet about some of the things we were seeing wrong in the show and wound up having a similar conversation with Dr. Van Stone, whom you will see is very colorful and friendly.  The more we talked, the more it became apparent that what he was saying needed to be shared with you.

As we’ve noted before, the Lord Pacal Sarcophogus cover, all decked out as a spaceship model is pretty cool.  The thing is, it just doesn’t have anything to do with reality.

Last Friday night’s show probably was the most appalling of all–the thought that Ancient Aliens, now not so ancient, were and possible are controlling the weather and natural events on our planet to affect the outcome of the human race.  Amazing.

A NIGHT WITH A PROFESSOR

The conversations with Dr. Van Stone have been very engaging and informative.  In fact, we’re proud to announce that on March 22, 2012, he will be available in a Webinar to talk more about the fantastic predictions about 2012 and Mayan culture and allow you to ask questions and interact with him like you cannot when he and others are in a TV show.  For this first show, we’re offering a discounted rate of $7.99 and it will begin at 6 p.m. PST (9 EST/8 CST) in the United States.  Sign up today, we are going to limit the size of the first Webinar so we don’t want you to miss out.

2012 : What’s Really Likely To Happen–Dr. Mark Van Stone Talks to TWE

Click the Link to Play the Audio File ==>:  Dr. Mark Van Stone On What’s Going To Happen in 2012

The Dec. 21, 2012 Doomsday predictions can be pretty scary if one believes everything heard without giving it any real thought or researching the specifics of 2012 prophecy associated with the Maya.  Many have predicted the end of the world in 2012 and used the Mayan calendar and things like the “unusual” galactic alignment etc. to make far-fetched predictions about when will the world end. But the evidence that actually exists point to dramatically different conclusions than those who have been given megaphones on TV shows like Ancient Aliens on the History Channel 2.

From an excerpt in his book, 2012: Science and Prophecy of the Ancient Maya, Dr. Mark Van Stone, quotes four typical predictions for events that could happen in the year 2012 based on interpretations of many scholars and amateur archeologists.  Those often include:

“An imminent polar reversal that will wipe our hard drives clean.” — Daniel Pinchbeck

“The rare celestial alignment of our solar system, our sun, and our planet with the center of our galaxy—an event that will not happen again for another 26,000 years.” –Gregg Braden

The “dawning of a Wisdom Age … standing on the shoulders of the Information Age.” –Peter Russell

“The December 21, 2012, date will likely be a “nonevent” similar to … the widely anticipated Y2K phenomenon.” — Robert K. Sitler

But the reality is, when the morning of Dec. 22, 2012 arrives, unless something truly bizarre happens, most of us still will be here. At most, ancient Maya writings say that the god, Bolon Yokte, is going to appear in person and yes, as Dr. Van Stone says, “put on a costume.”

Why is there so much speculation about planets aligning, magnetic poles of the Earth reversing, high numbers of solar flares from the sun affecting the communications on the planet, etc., etc. etc.  And Lord, let’s not forget the guys on Ancient Aliens.

2012: Science and Prophecy of The Ancient Maya

We’ve partnered with Dr. Van Stone to do some very special and amazing things with his book in the coming months, but for now, we are honored to share with you this audio recording with him talking about some of the predicted things that will happen in 2012.

This is just the beginning in a series of recordings with Dr. Van Stone.

Mayan King Pakal and His ‘Spacecraft’

I don’t know if you saw the season premier of Ancient Aliens Season 5 a week or so ago, but to his credit, Giorgio Tsoukalos had a guy from Lucas Films on displaying what appeared to be Mayan King Pakal in what Erich Von Daniken has long portrayed as a “spacecraft.”

The image is based on the sarcophagus cover of Pakal’s tomb in Palenque, Mexico and since the 1970s has been the red meat, smoking gun of the UFO fringe to support Ancient Astronaut Theories.  I even tweeted that night that Giorgio and the producers of Ancient Aliens deserved credit; the 3D model the Lucas Films designer made looked pretty darn cool–of course it did, he works for Lucas Films.

The problem is of course, it’s ridiculous when you place it in actual context to what’s on the cover of Pakal’s tomb.

The Ceiba Tree

The Ceiba Tree of South American origin is a pretty unique looking tree.  It also has been found in Southeast Asia, but it’s primary interest here is its use in Pre-Columbian MesoAmerican mythology where it was incorporated into beliefs associated with “The World Tree” and how it connected the heavens, the earth and the underworld all in one fell swoop.

Pakal's Sarcophagus

Just the root system of the tree is pretty amazing and curious.  But it’s branches tend to grow out  horizontally at 90 degree angles from the base of the trunk and in many an ancient drawing, etching, stone carving, sarcophagus cover, it’s pointing in the four cardinal directions of north, east, south and west.

Such is the case clearly depicted on Pakal’s tomb cover.

To the right, I’ve posted a colored drawing for your own assisted observations.

So what do we have here?  Well, in green, I’ve colored in what appears to be a rather large bird sitting atop the tree. In orange below is the actual Ceiba tree.  Notice the branches of the tree pointing out at 90 degree angles?

In red is clearly a two-headed snake, with a symmetrical head appearing on both end of the snake.

Apparently, this was a quite-often-featured type of snake and it usually signified the birth of some new form of something happening.

Moving on down is King Pakal, almost lying on his back.  It was this pose that Von Daniken made famous by showing similar photos of former US Astronaut John Glenn in a similar pose in a Mercury spacecraft of the 1960s.  By showing US Sen. Glenn as though he were in his Gemini spacecraft, Von Daniken was able to convince many a reader over the past four decades that surely Pakal must have been in a spacecraft, too, and that the Mayans were suggesting in this representation that their king was either an ancient alien or space traveler.  Indeed, in the Season 5 Ancient Aliens premier episode, Author David Childress proclaims Pakal as “The original rocket man.”

Good grief, Charlie Brown! And Snoopy could fight the Red Barron from atop his doghouse.

Below Pakal in the drawing to the right is the base of the Ceiba tree.  Von Daniken says the texture at the bottom of the tree is fire coming out of the engines of the spacecraft. The Lucas Film model maker actually put rocket cones on the model displayed in the TV show.

HOGWASH

It is just this sort of distortion that takes place in shows like Ancient Aliens that those none-the-wiser fall prey to.  Here at The Wonders Expedition, over the next few years, we are going to investigate hundreds of sites around the world and help the public by showing them nonsense like that depicted on Ancient Aliens is ridiculous and shameful.  It’s one thing to do things in a light-hearted manner in the guise of entertainment, but it’s also another to sit there in front of a camera like Childress, Daniken and Tsoukalos do and clearly misrepresent the truth.

Add this other thought, too: What ruler in present day society do you know, as well, who if they did have access to a spaceship, would be the one sitting at its controls?  Does President Obama fly Air Force One?  It’s just as nutty to think that King Pakal more than 1,000 years ago also would have been the one to fly an ancient spacecraft isn’t it?  I mean, seriously.  He was the king of his people. Wouldn’t an ancient ruler, if he had had access to such sophisticated travel also have been sophisticated enough to build in a space for him to ride as a passenger and not as the actual pilot?  Seriously?

Ancient Aliens 2012 Show–What would the Mayans say?

Update 9:02 p.m. CST: Well, the second show tonight has started and the summation is this: WE ARE ALL GOING TO DIE in 2012.  We have heard from Dr. Mark Van Stone’s representatives and will be talking with him after he’s had a chance to see tonight’s shows.  LOL, and we just saw he’s in the show.  How cool is that?

UPDATE: We now are 24 minutes into the first show and wow, this isn’t as far-fetching as we thought it was going to be.  In fact, they’ve pulled out some pretty cool stuff.  The 3D statue of the Mayan king, Pakal, was pretty cool.

And what is it with David Childress?  He’s not said, “Extra Terrestrials!” at the end of a sound byte yet!  He’s not even said it at all!

And the bumpers with Giorgio Tsoukalos is going to inspire a hair fashion phenom, we can just feel it.

It’s about an hour until the new 2012 Ancient Aliens season begins on H2 and the show is about 2012 and the Mayan “predictions.”

We have a feeling going in to this new series that this will be an hour of great exaggerations of fact and the taking of liberties with editorial license.

Premise for a Young Adult Drinking Game

For instance, every time author David Childress is on and finishes a soundbyte that ends with the words, “Extra terrestrials,” then everyone in the room should have to take a drink.

Every time the announcer says the words, “ancient astronaut theorists,” then everyone in the room should have to take a drink.

Every time Giorgio A. Tsoukalos @Tsoukalos  appears needing to do something about that tan and his hair, well, you know.

2012

There are plenty of good sources to counter the nonsense that’s being stirred up about 2012 and what the Mayans did or did not suggest might happen this December 21, 2102.

One learned professor who has spent his career studying the Mayans, Dr. Mark Van Stone, and who we’ve followed says that on that day, it’s a Friday, he’s going to get up and go to the office and grade papers.

The book sells for $8.95 electronically and we’ve been going through it.  It paints a much different picture than the one Tsoukalos, Childress et al are sharing through H2.

Okay, it’s almost time for the show.

Just for the fun of it, “EXTRA TERRESTRIALS!”  Okay, drink.  It’s going to take one or two or more to get through the show without an eye roll or more….

If you were a Mayan watching tonight’s show, our guess is you’d say, “Where in the world did they come up with that?!”
