Supermoon 2012!
The May 5, 2012 full moon was what astronomers call a Supermoon. For this full moon happened when the moon was at/near perigee–its closest point to the Earth in its orbit around our planet.
For this event the moon was roughly 356,953 km or 221,802 miles away. Like all full moons, looking up at this one in the later hours of the night it will appear big and bright, but it’s going to look like a full moon. One man on Twitter today was saying it was the difference between a 15 inch pizza and a 16 inch pizza. We’re not sure we agree, but it was pretty nonetheless.
It’s when the moon rises and sets, when it’s closest to the Earth’s horizon, when it will appear to be monstrous.
So for all you shutter bugs out there who missed moonrise, there’s always moonsetting at about 6 a.m. tomorrow, so get your cameras ready and start scouting out some prairie landscapes that this will look its best near.

There was no known archeoastronomic calendar date associated with yesterday’s release of the Adobe Creative Cloud CS6 Suite of products–May 11, 2012–but after going through clips we recently shot of Dr. Anthony Aveni of Colgate, I’m sure, as he would say, we could find some 2012 enthusiast to “cherry pick” some points of significance to [...]
